Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

MALIGAYANG PASKO PO at MALIGAYANG BAGONG TAON!!!
or in English: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Malaya Family. A less active family we reactivated.
First off, Elder Pedersen and I bought about 100 large candy bars and 150 small candy bars and spent all of Christmas Day wishing people Merry Christmas and handing out candy. It was super fun! Everyone is so nice hear. Everywhere we went people offered us food and often would stop us on the street and give us food even though we had never met them before. By the end of the day I probably put on 10 extra pounds! It was such a fun day! We also shared short messages about the birth of Christ and the true meaning of Christmas. We taught one man in particular named JoJo. He had a terrible stroke a few years ago and can no longer stand and has difficulty speaking. However, he understands very well and has a very kind heart. We shared with him Alma 7:10-13 about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, and as we shared he began crying. He feels he has made too many mistakes in his life, but I know that
Brother Villeyamoore. An amazing member that is exactly the same as
Curtis Hemmert. He is literally the filipino version. I always call him
"Tito Ko"(my uncle.) He called me "Pinson Niya" (my nephew.)
through the Atonement of Jesus Christ all of our pain, guilt, and regret can be wiped clean. Jesus Christ should be our main focus during this season and in every season of our lives. Because the fact is, we all make mistakes. We all experience sicknesses. We all suffer heartache. We all wish life could be easier. The fact is, Jesus Christ felt all of those feelings that we experience. He has felt our joy and our sorrow. He suffered for us. And because he suffered for us and felt our pain, he knows how to help us. When we feel alone, when we feel like no one understands us, remember that your Savior, Jesus Christ, knows everything you feel. He gives us reason to celebrate this Christmas, because through him we can receive everlasting
happiness! He is the Prince of Peace!

Mission Change

New Mission Boundaries were announced for Elder Hemmert's mission. The most hilarious part of this is Colby is going on a humanitarian trip this July/August to San Pablo, Philippines. This area has just been added to Elder Hemmert's mission. Will be interesting to see if they cross paths. Most likely, no, but still fun to laugh about!!! It is in the Lord's hands. ;)

Picture and Message from Sister Mary Lou Allen

We went with Elder Hemmert and Elder Pederson on Christmas Eve to the Garcia Family (See post https://elderbrittonhemmert.blogspot.com/2018/11/the-miracle-of-cold-turkey-for.html.)They are such good, impressive young men and we love them!
That picture was taken practically in the dark because there were only two small candles for light. No furniture except some wooden pallets that the family pulls out at night to sleep on. No electricity, stove, fridge. Really, hardly any belongings. No windows or actual doors. Tarp on the living area floor, probably acquired from a discard from a grocery store. I don't know how you could know this family and not be changed forever.

Britton's (LIVE) Testimony

It was the only Christmas Gift we cared about this year...GETTING TO FACETIME our BOY! Elder Hemmert is doing great! We had 45 min the hear about his adventures and it is amazing the comfort that comes just from seeing him. Not exactly sure how my parents did this back in the old days when my brother went off to serve his mission in India without emails/facetime/etc!!!!! Grateful for modern technology and the blessings of our sweet Elder and his service.

Elder Hemmert sends his love to all of you! Here is a video of his testimony:

15 Seater Stalker Van

Kumusta Po!

Highlights:
-We had our Ward Christmas Party and our ward is wild! They had all kinds of funny and random skits. I participated in one of the skits and the ward loved that me and my companion got involved. They all love us and are very helpful in missionary work. It is amazing how much more effective missionary work is when members are willing to work with missionaries!
-Also, just so you all know, caroling here is nothing like caroling in the States. In the states the people that are caroling give the presents, but here the carolers  are the one that receive the gifts. Basically they go house to house asking for money. It's kind of interesting, but the little kids love it, because the children get a lot of money doing it haha. Also if you don't have money to give them you simply say "Tawad" which basically means "forgiveness."

The VAN MAN named JAN JAN:
-As I said in my last email, two weeks ago we were walking on the street and a man that was very drunk invited us into his home and proceeded to tell us that he wanted to feel clean. He has taken the lives of seven people as a soldier and made many other decisions that he regrets. This past Sunday we were in his neighborhood picking up someone up for church, but the man we were hoping to walk to church was not home. We decided to make our way down a different street in hopes to find him down on the corner, but rather than finding that man we instead ran into Jan Jan (the drunk man that had brought us into his home). He seemed busy and didn't want to stop and talk, but for some reason I felt like I should invite him to go to church with us. So I invited him, he stopped walking, and asked when we would go. I said, "Ngayon po" (right now). He responded by saying, "Sige. Lets go." Without saying a word he walked to his home, and we followed. He invited us in and said he needed to shower first. He went in to the bathroom and we heard only three bucket dumps and he came out dressed and ready to go only two minutes later. It was the quickest "shower" in the world, and we headed out the door for church. However, rather than walking to church he began heading in the opposite direction. We followed him to the next block where he invited us to jump in his 15 SEATER SHUTTLE VAN! He drove us to church and spent all of sacrament with us! It was amazing, and he loved it! He is such an interesting guy and full of surprises. It's always fun to visit him. We haven't even taught him yet and he came to church!

Stop Going Through the Motions

Magandang Umaga Po Mga Kapatid,

Highlights:
-I hypnotized an Inahin (Hen). I really impressed a bunch of Filipinos. However, they were also very worried I was killing their hen. Also, on the note of mga Manok (chickens). There are SOOO MANY Sabong (Fighting Roosters)! That is a very popular sport here!
-A drunk man told us to follow him back to his home... so of course... we did. He let us in, and his family was like, "Why did you bring two white men in our house!" We talked to the man, he says he wants to feel clean from his many mistakes. As a soldier he has taken the lives of seven people and made many other decisions that were not very good. We decided we would return to him and teach him about repentance when he was sober. As we left I went to shake his hand, but he grabbed me, pulled me in, and gave me the biggest, sweatiest hug EVER!  So yeah, that was awesome!

My little message for the day:
Well, I feel like weeks are flying by! I literally feel like I was emailing home yesterday, but it was a full week ago! So here is what I realized: I am GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS. It's not okay. I need to constantly strive to improve each day so that weeks don't feel wasted. Every day should feel well used. One thing I have decided to improve this next week is to begin setting daily goals again. I plan to stay steadfast in Christ and constantly improving by daily reading from the Book of Mormon for at least 30 minutes, saying genuine prayers, and many other day to day goals. I know as I make daily goals I can more fully "Press forward with a steadfastness in Christ" (2 Nephi 31:20).

CHALLENGE FOR YOU:
My challenge to you is to STOP GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS! Find something you want to improve, and work toward reaching that point. Daily goals are the key. Also, don't forget, the new year is close, so begin making resolutions now! We can always find ways to improve!

Tender Mercies & SPIDERS...

Maligayang Pasko!!

Spiritual Experience of the week:

This one may be considered a little odd at first, but is without a doubt a tender mercy of the Lord. Two nights ago I woke up to extremely loud barking from the neighboring dogs at 2:00 am. All of the dogs throughout our neighborhood were barking including the dog that sits just outside our bedroom window. They were so loud that I could not sleep. I laid awake for about 30 minutes, and with no hope of falling asleep I decided to get up for a bit. I figured if sleep wasn't an option than I might as well utilize that time, so I went to my desk just outside the bedroom and began studying from the Book of Mormon. In studying for a while I came across a wonderful scripture verse on faith, Moroni 7:37, "It is by faith that miracles are wrought." The dogs had not ceased their barking for what was now almost an entire hour, but I realized there was a way to get them to stop. Faith. I closed my scriptures, cleaned off my desk, and I knelt on the floor. At that moment I offered a prayer to my Heavenly Father in which I simply expressed that I know by faith miracles are wrought. Also that I know Heavenly Father can do ALL THINGS. And lastly, with that knowledge and faith that I have, I asked that Heavenly Father would either silence those dogs or at least silence them from my ears that I may no longer hear them and finally be able to sleep once again. I closed my prayer in the name of Jesus Christ and went to my room. the dogs had not ceased barking yet and in fact they seemed to get louder; however, just as Ether 12:6 says, "ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith." I knew that the my faith was simply being tested, but Heavenly father would eventually answer my prayer and silence those dogs. I climbed into bed with the dogs still barking, but at the very moment that my head hit the pillow, the dogs CEASED to bark. They did not bark even once after my head was on that pillow! I found myself smiling so wide that I began laughing. It was 3:00 am and I was laughing in the dark all by myself, because I knew Heavenly father had answered my prayer. I quickly was able to fall asleep, and woke up the next morning, one minute before my alarm, fully energized for a new day!
I know that Heavenly Father answers our prayers. I know that by Faith ALL THINGS are possible.

Invitation to all of you: Increase your Faith this Christmas Season by learning of Jesus Christ and praying to Heavenly Father daily by going to LightTheWorld.org  .https://www.mormon.org/christmas/

The Miracle of COLD TURKEY (For Thanksgiving Week)

Hello po,

I have two big Highlights:
1. First off, a kid went PEE IN MY SHOE, that's right! We were teaching an old lady, and her 3 year old grandson was crazy! He was screaming and yelling during our lesson, and he even threw food at us! then to top it off, he ran to the front steps, pulled down his pants all the way to his ankles and proceeded to fill both my shoes with his pee!!! I started busting out laughing! The lesson was a total disaster, but I got a really REALLY GOOD LAUGH out of it!! Oh, and yes, I had to wear those shoes the rest of the day!!

2. THE GARCIA FAMILY
The Garcia family consists of 9 people. They live in a small shack that they built themselves. The father and 14 year old son work in construction. Each night they sleep on wood pallets. But, all in all, they have some of the biggest smiles I've ever seen! They have been taking lessons from missionaries since July, and the mother along with 5 children were preparing for baptism on October 13. The father was not going to be baptized with his family because he was alcoholic and addicted to cigarettes. He spent much of his time and money on those harmful substances, and he was never able to stop even when he tried. Even though the father wouldn't be baptized, the rest of the family prepared for baptism. One week before their baptism, the father and mother got married on October 9th; however, that night the mother passed away from a heart attack. It was devastating! The family was extremely hurt as were we. They were such a happy and beautiful family. But, something amazing happened because of her passing. The father felt a desire to turn his life around and he dropped alcohol and cigarettes completely. He went COLD TURKEY! He decided he would prepare for baptism with his family, and that way his family could be more united and live together forever. We taught their family and moved their baptism date. Finally, the Garcia family, after so many hardships, was baptized this past saturday, November 24, as a family. It was so precious! They said they could feel their mother/wife smiling on their decision to be baptized and confirmed as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I was filled with joy for their family, because I know that they can now live with their family forever and be able to be with their mother again. I know that only through Faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism by someone holding the priesthood authority of God, receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end can we obtain eternal life as families. I am so happy for the Garcia Family! They are such a special family!

Snakes & Bug Bites

Magandang Umaga Po,

Weekly Highlights:
Possibly the spider that bit Elder Hemmert? (SCREAM)
-First I have a massive rash that covers a large portion of my calf and the back of my knee. We think it's a bug bite, but we aren't sure. It's probably nothing and will heal quickly. However, if I get dengue, pray for me. Just joking! It's already healing.
-We found a shortcut that goes through some dense brush that we used to get around to a few people's homes. It was great and saved a lot of time. However, we were visiting someone the other day and they said no one goes down that path anymore because there are a bunch of snakes there!! HAHA!! We went back and found big branches covering the path, maybe it really is dangerous! I guess the Lord protecting us from the snakes though haha.

Spiritual Experience:
The other day, on a very busy street, I met a man that was using crutches. In our short exchange I told him about our message of Jesus Christ and told him that by asking God through prayer he could know our message is true. I then invited him to pray, and if he prayed and came to know our message is true I asked him if he would be willing to be baptized even as Jesus Christ was. He said yes, and I asked for his address and we agreed to meet him on another day.
Well, two days later we just finished a lesson and began walking toward our next lesson. About a quarter mile down the road we realized we had went the wrong way. We turned around and were a little discouraged that we had wasted that time walking the wrong way. I looked down at my daily planner and I got this thought that we needed to stop by Junior Baltiste ( the man we met on the street). However, we were already behind schedule and we decided we didn't have enough time to visit him. Then all of a sudden we heard someone yell, "ELDERS!" We turned and there was Junior!! We quickly went up to him, and he told us he had been waiting for us, and he invited us to come back tomorrow to teach him. He said he was really excited to hear from us and go to church! We agreed to come back and we went on our way.
Originally, we thought we were going the wrong way, but all along that was the correct way. The Lord guided us a quarter mile down the wrong street so that we could find Junior. I kknow that the Lord will help us and support us when we are seeking to do His will.
3 Nephi 13:8 "Your father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him."
I know that the Lord will continue to guide me to those that are ready to recieve the restored gospel as long as I do His will.

Gift of Tongues

KUMUSTA PO KAYO,

First off here are the, worst to best - Highlights:
-I tried frying bananas just for fun, and all of the fire alarms went off. We had to disable them to shut it off, but it's okay, we put them back haha.
-In the Philippines it is courtesy to take your shoes off outside of people's homes before entering. Before one of our lessons I left my shoes outside, but when I came back to them after the lesson they were filled with soapy water. Apparently some little boys were bathing outside and they had decided they would "Wash my shoes" HAHAH!! It was so funny!! I had soaking feet all day!

The Spiritual highlight: One lady we are teaching loves to have us over and she loves to listen to us. We ask her to attend church and pray, she agrees to do so, but she never follows through. She said that "The Lord would excuse her for not attending church or praying because she was trying." The problem was that she was not trying. My tagalog is still terrible, but at this moment I began speaking to her in nearly perfect Tagalog. I asked her if she truly understands the suffering that Jesus Christ endured for us through His Atonement. I told her in unbroken Tagalog that I know that Jesus Christ was always obedient to the commandments of our Father in Heaven. I testified that Jesus Christ would never allow excuses and problems to get in the way of obeying the Father. That Jesus Christ payed the ultimate price, and the least we can do his obey the Father's commandments. I told her that we truly care for her; otherwise, we would not visit her and teach her about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I also told her to follow the example of Jesus Christ, and obey the commandments of the Father by praying and attending church. In bold but loving words I told her she wasn't trying hard enough. I asked her to give a better effort, and she said she would do so. We concluded the lesson and the Spirit was stronger than we had ever felt in our lessons with her. After walking home my companion turned toward me and told me, "I don't know if you realize it, but you just experienced the gift of tongues. You just spoke with her in perfect Tagalog."
-I know I still have a long way to go until I can speak Tagalog fluently, but I know that the Lord is helping me. I know that through him I can do anything. He helped me share my thoughts with that lady and those were the words she needed to hear. I am so grateful for the Lord. I know that as we "Look unto [Him], doubt not, fear not." He will lift us up and magnify our efforts.

Challenge: Seek the Lord's help this week through prayer. Have Faith, and he will support you.

FREE SHOWER SERVICES

Kumusta Po!!

Ill explain the subject in a sec but first!!
Elder & Sister Wakolo w/ Elder Hemmert and Elder Pederson
Here are 5 words to describe my mission so far: Sweaty, Moist, Delicious, Humbling, and Spiritual!
Next a few highlights:
-I was interviewed by a general authority. Elder Wakolo of the Seventy!! It was amazing! He only chose a few Elders from our mission to interview and I was chosen. It was so special!
-On that note, I'm known as the mice slayer here, because I killed 4 mice within 24 hours at our apartment. We have sooooo many mice! But it's okay, I'm taking care of it!
-I mowed our lawn with a machete which was something else for sure. I legit haven't seen a single lawn mower in this country.

NOW FOR THE SUBJECT: This is my most embarrassing moment EVER!!
I have been trying to serve as many people as possible even in simple ways, and I've been trying to use the Tagalog I know. So after leaving a lesson we stepped outside into the dark night. I saw two ladies about 30 years old each (one was someone we have been teaching). They were washing dishes in a wash basin, so I was gonna try to offer help in Tagalog, so I said "Kailangan po ba ninyo ng tulong?" or "Do You need Help?" My companion then immediately pushed me forward and said, "NO NO NO. Continue walking." And then he proceeded to apologize to the women. We left quickly and once we were past their view I asked him why he wouldn't let me help them clean their dishes. My companion then told me they weren't doing dishes, they were SHOWERING!!!!!! I HAD NO IDEA!! I thought they were doing dishes. It was so dark I couldn't tell!! So yeah... I offered to help two women shower... and somehow I am supposed to go back and look her in the eyes to teach her about Jesus Christ and His gospel. That might be a bit awkward at first hahahahahah!
My Advice to you: So okay, I'll admit, my efforts in offering service didn't exactly go as planned, but I advise you to follow my example. Offer service to everyone you possibly can. Whether they need it or not you can show your love for others by offering service. I promise your attempts won't backfire they way that mine did!! Find opportunities to serve, even to strangers! Jesus Christ is the perfect example of a service oriented individual. He never shied away from those in need, and he always extended a hand. he helped those he was close with and even those that were strangers to him. Follow his example in service and seek to help everyone you can! Even to strangers!! And even if all you do is wash their dishes!

Until Next week

TYPHOONS, HALLOWEEN, L.B.M., AND BAPTISMS!

Kumusta Po Mga Kapatid,

Well, Its HAlloween!!! And Christmas? Yeah, so holidays are a little weird here. For this entire week kids have been dressed up tricker treating, and a bunch of people already have christmas decorations. Every mall/ grocery store plays christmas music. It is kind of odd, BUT I LOVE IT!!! HAHAHA!!

Also, I have a crazy experience! So we were teaching a very nice lady, and when we finished the lesson she gave us some Pancit (It's like Ramen without any broth). The Pancit was in a take out box, and when I went to eat it I could tell it was a little old. However, I felt bad saying no, and this lady was really nice so I ate it.... That was a mistake. One hour later we had to run two miles back to the house so that I could use the bathroom!! I was on the toilet for almost an hour! I got super sick! Here they have a common acronym called LBM (Loose Bowel Movement), and I definitely had LBM. It is NOT FUN! However, I took about 10 pills and went back out to share the restored gospel of Jesus Christ because that's what Jesus would do. He wouldn't sit inside all day simply because he was sick!!! HAHAH!

Anyways, on that note......  I also survived my first Typhoon!!! It really wasnt very bad in our area.
Just a bunch of wind, rain and some mild floods. It was pretty fun, and It was actually really awesome because people took pity on us and let us in to their homes!

Last experience, I had my first baptism and second baptism this week. The sisters in our ward had been teaching these two investigators for the past few months, and I had the opportunity to baptize them! It was really special, and their testimonies were so strong. they knew, with fire in their soul, That we truly are God's children. That Jesus Christ truly payed the price of sin through his atonement. That through the Gospel of Jesus Chrsit we can be forgiven of our guilts and mistakes. And WE CAN LIVE WITH OUR FAMILIES FOREVER!!!

I am so grateful for the Gospel of Jesus Christ! I know it is true!

BE GRATEFUL

Hello Po!!!!

So my message to you is short. It begins at 7:00pm. Its dark outside. We walked to a family about 20 minutes away. We came to their door (curtain). Their home had three rooms. Each room could maybe fit three people lying down shoulder to shoulder, and the walls were made of thin plywood. The ground was concrete, and there wasn't a bathroom. The family had 10 people in it. I'm not sure how, but these ten people somehow managed to sleep and live in this small space. This is their home. We visited with them a while, they recently joined the church of Jesus Christ. The kids were obviously lacking nutrients, and most of gotten very rare amounts of food. I couldn't tell the 12 year old from the six year old because they were the same size. I could see the outline of their bones easily through their skin. But THEY HAD SMILES ON THEIR FACES. Their kindness was immense. One of the children ran to a nearby store and came back with Oreos and Sprite. They gave them to us, but we kindly refused saying we already ate and were fine. They DID NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER. They shoved the food in our bags. With my heart aching for the kids that needed the food more than me I had to accept with gratitude in my heart. These kids needed the oreos more than me. The family needed that money. But their kindness was too large to allow us to go unfed. They are a loving people. They are a grateful people. They have little, but they are grateful for everything they have.

My advice to you. BE GRATEFUL!! For everything!! The Lord gave you everything. Nothing is yours. It is given to you by the Lord. Give thanks to him. You know the roof over your head. The curtains that cover your window. The running water that magically comes out of a metal tube. The Lord blessed you with those things. thank him for those things!

Alma 7:23 "Always return thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive."

BE GRATEFUL

It's More Fun In The Philippines!

Hello Po!!

So there is a popular phrase here."It's more fun in the Philippines!" Let me explain how you might use it. (all REAL examples)

-For example, let's say it rains for only 15 minutes yet the streets are flooded. Then as you are walking, your foot gets stuck in 6 inches of mud. Then you might smile, shrug and say, "It's more fun in the Philippines!"

-Or you have to go number 2 and since there is no TP here you have to use the hand that you don't eat with in order to clean up. Then you might smile, shrug, and say, "It's more fun in the Philippines!"

-If you are constantly dripping sweat, and you don't have Air conditioning. Then you would smile, shrug, and say, "It's more fun in the Philippines!"

-If you eat rice with every meal, then you would smile, shrug and say, "It's more fun in the Philippines!"
Do you understand?

Here is what I want you to understand, no matter the situation you are in, you can always try to see it in a positive light. When a trial comes your way, or you have to do something uncomfortable or difficult, you can always just smile and be happy. Make the most of every situation!

That's my advice this week: See everything in a positive light. When it rains and you get all wet, don't say "darn, I wish I didn't get wet." Instead say, "Hey, at least I don't need to shower today! I just took a shower!" Enjoy every minute!!! This life was given to us by our Father in Heaven. He loves us, so He provided us with trials so that we can learn and grow. Enjoy your trials, see them in a positive light. Find ways to learn and grow from every experience!!!
